The Plague Doctor
The Plague Doctor
Charcoal on Fabriano - 16" x 17"
Framed - 24” x 30”
This drawing is a pictorial love letter to my husband John, the model for this portrait and my spiritual plague doctor during the pandemic. We all know that time is a thief - never have we seen such thievery in action as over this past year during Covid. But we artists - we know better because we cheat time every day when we sit down at the easel and freeze “this moment” in time forever. The inspiration for this piece was a trip to Venice that we took before the pandemic; this is where we bought this mask. This is a steampunk version of a mask that a Plague Doctor would have worn during the bubonic plague. This drawing is a glimpse behind the mask and represents time alone together during the best, toughest and most defining year in isolation.
