Painted Master Copies
After Gerome "Bashi-Bazouk"
Private Collection
After viewing Gerome's painting "Bashi-Bazouk" whilst on vacation, I felt compelled to copy it as I was awestruck by its textures, colours and patterns found within the composition. This is my finished work.
I fell in love with the richness of the colours and patterns found within the headdress that illuminate this portrait.
Thick layers of white impasto are beneath the glazes that comprise the folds of fabric of this taffeta jacket.
Oil on panel - 18" x 24"
The still life aspects of this painting intrigued me as it further enhances the play between textured surfaces as is evident in the smoothness of the sword handles.
This is the "dead colour" stage of the painting alluding to the process of its creation.
