Recreating A Colour Study From A Master Work
Materials List
Artist Instructor: Alexandrea Nicholas-Jennings
Photo references of the materials are at the bottom of this page.
As you grow as an artist your artist materials and tools should grow with you. Most of these materials you may already own.
Some things can be purchased inexpensively as they will not effect the quality of you art product. I will mark these with a (D) for items available at a dollar store. (D) = Dollar Store
Other artist materials are non-negotiable and the higher the quality of the product the better the art and your art experience. These materials are available at stores such as DeSerres, Above Ground Art Supplies, Michaels and Articulations – a boutique style art store in Toronto.
Materials you will need for this workshop:
Brushes
TWO of each size would be ideal:
• Filberts - sizes 2,4,6,8
• Hog hair brush (round or flat) – sizes 2,4,6,8
• Liners – a variation of sizes for fine detail (at least 5 of these)
• An assortment of inexpensive small brushes to work finer detail - some flats, some rounds, a small fan brush - anything that you may already own that is small enough to work on a painting that is between 5x7” and 8x10” (D)
Supports
Please have 2-3 acrylic gessoed supports in the case that you would like to work on more than one painting or try a different surface. Options are always good. The smoother the support surface the better.
Minimum Support Size: 5x7”
Maximum Support Size: 9x12”
Acceptable supports are:
A pad of Canvas paper
Canvas board (D)
Ampersand Gessobord panel
Tools
• Disposable palette (D) (at least 8x10 inches) or a wood palette of similar dimensions
• Palette knife
• 3-4 Medium Cups with Lids – the dollar store sells these small plastic cups in the craft isle. These will be used for OMS and Linseed oil. (D)
• Mahl stick
• 1 small glass jar with a lid for brush clean up (such as a small recycled jam jar, or salsa jar)
• A Drawing board – 18x24 “ dimension of Masonite board, or 1/2 inch foam core will do. This will serve as your easel or work surface.
• Bull Dog clips or utility clamps (D)
• A ball point pen (D)
• A fine tip marker – Sharpie Ultra Fine Tip Permanent Black Marker (D)
• Aluminium Pie Plate (D)
• Bamboo skewer or a #1 knitting needle (D)
Consumables
• Photo visual reference of a master work (I will provide a small selection)
• Tracing paper (I will provide this)
• Charcoal transfer paper (I will provide this)
• Masking tape OR green painter’s tape (D)
• A roll of paper towels (D)
• Odourless Mineral Spirits (OMS) - 500 ml - any brand will do. I use Gamblin Gamsol.
◦ Turpentine is NOT permitted in the studio.
• Linseed oil - 1 small bottle - 250ml. I use Gamblin.
Oil Paints
A higher grade oil paint yields better results. I recommend Old Holland, Rublev or M Harding at the higher end. Gamblin, Williamsburg or Windsor Newton ‘Artists Grade’ at the medium end. The choice is yours. I use all of these paints. For the purpose of this workshop Gamblin or Windsor Newton would suffice. The colours you will require are:
• Titanium White - 37 ml
• Yellow Ochre - 37 ml
• Bright Red or Cadmium Red - 37 ml (this is the most expensive colour)
• Ivory Black - 37 ml
